  2. Coverage of the data

This site covers the local authorities that appear in the Food Standards Agency file we accepted, and nothing else. Geography comes from the authority fields inside that file. We do not map a postcode to an authority, we do not use a boundary file, and we do not rebuild an address the publisher withheld.

Two schemes run side by side. England, Wales and Northern Ireland publish ratings from 0 to 5. Scotland publishes a pass result or a result needing improvement. Eat Safe is a separate award and is not a rating, so it never becomes a number here. Because the scales differ, Scottish pages are never compared with the 0 to 5 pages.

The publisher refreshes the file daily, but an unchanged file is not a new inspection. We record the release timestamp of the copy we accepted, and a figure only moves when the underlying records move.

Some premises have no rating date, or no breakdown of the three component scores. Those premises stay in the counts they belong to and drop out of the age figure and the component mix. The page says which part is missing rather than filling the hole with a zero.

Country labels come from the Food Standards Agency's own authority grouping, matched by exact authority name to its authority codes. Counts and ratings come only from the accepted national CSV, never from a sum of authority downloads or live counters.
